This class is offered in partnership with the California Department of Transportation, Division of Local Assistance. Registration fees are subsidized with funding from the Cooperative Training Assistance Program. Reduced rates are available to employees of California's city, county, regional, and other public agencies only.

Description

Traffic signal projects must comply with specifications as required by the Caltrans Standard Plans and Specifications Manual. Inferior work on signals or inadequate traffic management during project construction can create potentially dangerous conditions with liability impacts for local agencies. This one-day course provides training on best practices for the management and construction inspection of these systems, including examinations of wires, cables, signal heads, and pedestrian/vehicle detectors.

What You Will Learn

Students learn how to manage field construction inspections of traffic signals and components in accordance with Caltrans' Standards Plans and Specifications Manual. Students also learn how to avoid the consequences of inferior or inadequate project management or construction.

This class is intended for inspectors, designers, maintenance supervisors, electricians, and other public agency personnel with responsibilities related to construction or installation of traffic signals.

Cancellation Policy

To cancel your registration and receive a refund less a $75 processing fee, you must notify TechTransfer at least five (5) working days before the course is scheduled to begin. Notifications must be made in writing and sent by email to registrar@techtransfer.berkeley.edu. We reserve the right to charge the full course fee if proper notification is not sent to TechTransfer. We don't offer refunds for classes with registration fees of $75 or less.

In lieu of canceling your registration, you have three additional options: you may (1) transfer your registration to another class, (2) receive a tuition credit for the total amount, useable toward a future class, or (3) send a substitute in your place. Please contact us at least 5 full working days before the class is scheduled to begin so we may process your request.

If you’ve registered for a self-paced class, you cannot receive a refund once you start the class.

We recommend you discuss any possible problems or online security issues with your IT person before you register for any online classes. If you are worried about connectivity issues, please contact the online training coordinator the week before the class to schedule a time to test your system. If you do not test your system and you have technical issues during a live online class, we will not provide a refund.

Rafat Raie

Mr. Raie has nearly 35 years of traffic engineering & planning experience in both the public and private sectors. As a City Traffic Engineer for several cities, he is well experienced in the design, operations, planning, and maintenance. Mr. Raie has delivered numerous courses for professionals as an instructor with ITS Tech Transfer and conducted many safety assessments for tribal communities as part of the UC Berkeley SafeTREC program. In the past decade of his public sector experience, he led the deployment of several Smart City technologies for improved communications, parking management, detection, multi-modal data collection and signal preemption.


Leonard Gilliana

Traffic Signal Specialist, Advanced Mobility Group

Mr. Gillana brings nearly 40 years of public sector expertise in the area of traffic signal operations, construction, design and inspection. He has led the operations and maintenance of a smart city operations center and patented many key advancements in the industry. In the private sector, he led the implementation of the most sophisticated regional signal system in Coachella Valley. He co-founded a unique training establishment, LNR Transportation, inc. which developed several specialized courses shared with over 1000 signal professionals across the country. He has been an instructor with UC Berkeley Tech Transfer Program for the past ten years.
