Description

This is a 4-Hour comprehensive safety training course for the transportation construction industry developed to educate on the hazards found in trench and excavation work along roadways in California. ARTBA created this course with support from the OSHA Harwood grant.

Topics Include

  • OSHA Standards for Trenching and Excavations
  • Responsibilities of the Competent Person, workers, operators and other professionals
  • Cave-ins Protection Systems
  • Other Related Hazards and Inspection requirements

What You Will Learn

By the end of the training, students will:
  • Be able to identify basic hazards associated with trenching & excavation
  • Understand how protective systems work and how they protect workers
  • Be able to safely work knowing requirements and safety considerations in trenching and excavation work

Who Should Attend

This training is designed for road construction and maintenance crews and their supervisors who are expected to work alongside the public street. This course will also benefit traffic/civil engineers and public works inspectors who design, direct, and inspect construction and maintenance work done on public streets. Utility company workers and contractors, who frequently do maintenance work within the public street right-of-way, will also benefit from this training.

There are no refunds for classes with registration fees of $75 or less.
In lieu of canceling your registration, you have three additional options, you may (1) transfer your registration to another class, (2) receive a tuition credit for the full amount, useable toward a future class, or (3) send a substitute in your place. This is a live online course. All times for the online lecture are in (California) Pacific Time. Approximately one week before the course start date, all paid students will receive detailed instructions on how to access the web-based lecture and course site. You will also receive instructions on how to access the student course notebook.

Bruce Drewes

Transportation Technology Transfer (3T) Group

Mr. Drewes has working in the transportation industry for the pass thirty two years. Working for the Idaho Transportation Department for nineteen years in maintenance, construction, traffic and training. In 2001, he moved to the University of Idaho as the Training and Research Manager for the Idaho Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP). In 2005, Mr. Drewes become President of the National LTAP Association and in 2007 the Co-Chair of NLTAPA Safety Committee. Late in 2008 the Idaho LTAP was moved to the Local Highway Technical Assistance Program, Bruce moved with the program, becoming the Manger of the program until his retirement on August 2013. He has continued his focus on employee and transportation safety by providing courses through the ARTBA's Road Safety Plus program on topics ranging from Disaster Response, OSHA 10 hour, Preventing Runover and Backovers and Train the Trainer course on the Road Safety Plus program.
