This class is offered in partnership with the California Department of Transportation, Division of Local Assistance. Registration fees are subsidized with funding from the Cooperative Training Assistance Program. Description

This new online course offers summary of fundamental principles, operational requirements and expected benefits of some of the frequently deployed Adaptive Traffic Control Systems. The first session presents differences between adaptive and responsive traffic controls and introduces briefly three ATCS deployed in California (ACS Lite, QuicTrac, and SCOOT). The second session addresses InSync, a system with the highest growth in number of deployments over the last few years. The third session presents SynchroGreen, adaptive version of traffic signal software from one of the most respected traffic signal software developers in the US. Finally, the fourth session focuses on SCATS, one of the oldest and widely deployed systems in the entire world. Each session is divided into three major parts: First offers summary of fundamental principles of a selected adaptive technology, second covers summary of operational and institutional requirements to run adaptive control, and the third presents recent case studies with a glimpse on the operational benefits.

What You Will Learn

Students will obtain a significant amount of technical information to understand fundamental principles of operations, deployment requirements, and expected operational benefits (highlighted through exemplary case studies) of some of the frequently deployed Adaptive Traffic Control Systems. This information will help students to become familiar with these relatively new signal control technologies and develop a realistic set of expectations regarding their deployments and operational benefits.

This course is intended for traffic engineers, planners, technicians, and decision makers in municipal, county, and state agencies interested in the operations, requirements and benefits of Adaptive Traffic Control System technologies, particularly those with the responsibility for the planning, design, implementation, operation, and maintenance of traffic signal control systems for urban areas.

Note: Cancellation fee is $75. There are no refunds for classes with registration fees of $75 or less. For all other classes, you may cancel your enrollment and receive a refund of your registration fee less $75, provided we receive your written request to cancel at least 5 full working days before the class is scheduled to begin.

In lieu of canceling your registration, you have three additional options, you may (1) transfer your registration to another class, (2) receive a tuition credit for the full amount, useable toward a future class, or (3) send a substitute in your place. Joy Bhattacharya

Mr. Bhattacharya serves as the Director of Innovative Transportation Solutions at Advanced Mobility Group's (AMG). He provides innovative Traffic Engineering, Transportation Planning, and ITS solutions for the Global Market. He has expertise in traffic engineering, traffic simulation, traffic signal systems with traffic simulation, traffic signal timing, traffic operations, ITS, Connected and Autonomous Vehicles, and Smart Cities. He is an ITE fellow and has approximately 25 years of transportation engineering experience.


Aleksandar Stevanovic

PhD, Associate Professor, University of Pittsburgh

Dr. Aleksandar Stevanovic is a member of TRB AHB25 Committee for Traffic Signal Systems and member of ITE, TRB, ASCE, and other professional societies. He has authored more than 150 journal and conference papers and 30 technical reports for various national and state transportation agencies. Dr. Stevanovic has hands-on experience with multiple Adaptive Traffic Control Systems. He is the author of NCHRP Synthesis 403 - Adaptive Traffic Control Systems: Domestic and Foreign State of Practice, NCHRP Project 20-07 Task 414 - Benefits of Adaptive Traffic Control Deployments: A Review of Evaluation Studies and numerous others papers and reports about Adaptive Traffic Control Systems, and traffic signals in general. Dr. Stevanovic has been involved in multiple procurement processes and field evaluations of Adaptive Traffic Control Systems. He has also designed interface logics between those systems and micro-simulation models and customized fine-tuned adaptive operations on his own. He has organized, and participated on, multiple industry panels, training events, and conference sessions about Adaptive Traffic Control Systems.
