DescriptionThis one-day course offers students an opportunity to learn how to design more "forgiving" roadways-those that minimize hazardous installations and reduce potential for death, injury, and property damage associated with crashes. Instruction focuses on best practices in the design and evaluation of common roadside structures such as guardrails, concrete barriers, signs, light pole supports, and work-zone devices. This course is based on the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide, Caltrans Standard Plans, and the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 350: Recommended Procedures for the Safety Performance Evaluation of Roadside Features. Video presentations illustrate various safety devices and impact attenuators, to help students understand the dynamics of roadside crashes.

What you will learnStudents learn how to recognize, evaluate and resolve potentially hazardous situations involving common roadside structures. Students also learn how to design, install, and maintain new devices to mitigate or avoid these hazards, and how to identify conditions that could make some safety features less effective than expected.
Who should attendThis class is intended for engineers, planners, guardrail inspectors, maintenance personnel, and managers with responsibilities for safety management, maintenance and traffic problem analysis.

Note: Cancellation fee is $75. There are no refunds for classes with registration fees of $75 or less. David Royer is a licensed Civil Engineer and Traffic Engineer. He's been a valued instructor and course developer at Tech Transfer for 40 years. His teaching and development include the Work Zone Safety Program, Roadside Safety & Barrier Systems, and the Maintaining Retroreflectivity at Required Levels course. Mr. Royer also served as an LTAP Field Agent during the period that Tech Transfer served as the California LTAP Center. In 2018, he was the first to receive the Technology Transfer Program's Instructor of the Year award. He retired at the position of Principal Transportation Engineer from LADOT after 32 years of service, and for the past 23 years, he has been a consulting traffic and highway engineer. Because of his extensive experience and teaching in the field of work zone safety, he voluntarily represents Tech Transfer on the WATCH Manual Committee and on the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (Part 6 of the MUTCD).
