DescriptionAsphalt pavement is a major component of our transportation system. Transportation agencies at the city and county level can maximize the value of their huge investment in streets and roads by using proper pavement maintenance strategies. This course provides a solid working knowledge of the most common pavement maintenance and preservation practices. Basic principles, best field practices and safety issues are covered. This course is based on Day 3 of the IDM-03 Asphalt Pavement Materials, Design, Construction & Maintenance and is offered as a low-cost alternative to the three-day course IDM-03.

What You Will LearnBy the end of this course, students have a better understanding of the most common pavement maintenance strategies and materials, and their most appropriate uses in an agency's overall pavement management plan.
Who Should AttendThis class is tailored for those directly involved in asphalt pavement maintenance or rehabilitation as well as maintenance supervisors and managers, engineers with some responsibility for maintenance, pavement management, or rehabilitation. It is appropriate for those who are new to the subject as well as for experienced pavement managers wanting additional technical background or an update on the state-of-the-practice.

Note: There are no refunds for classes with registration fees of $75 or less. In lieu of canceling your registration, you have three additional options, you may (1) transfer your registration to another class, (2) receive a tuition credit for the full amount, useable toward a future class, or (3) send a substitute in your place. Please contact us at least 5 full working days before the class is scheduled to begin so we may process your request.

If you are worried about connectivity issues, please contact the online training coordinator the week before the class to schedule a time to test your system. If you do not test your system and you have technical issues during a live online class, we will not provide a refund.

Roger SmithAsphalt Pavements Consultant and Trainer
Roger Smith is a consultant specializing in asphalt pavement and materials. In addition to his asphalt consulting services, he has provided training services through the state Technology Transfer (T2) Centers in California and Nevada. He also creates and delivers pavement training classes for the Institute of Transportation Studies (U.C. Berkeley) and the California Asphalt Pavement Association (CalAPA), and is a part-time Pavement Specialist with the California Pavement Preservation Center at Chico State University. Roger began his career with Caltrans, ending up as the Senior Engineer in charge of the asphalt materials section of Caltrans' Transportation Laboratory (Translab) in Sacramento. After leaving Caltrans, he worked for 10 years as a field engineer for the Asphalt Institute and later served as Executive Director of the Northern California Asphalt Producers Association (NCAPA). He is a graduate of Michigan Technological University with a degree in Civil Engineering.
