Reduced rates are available to employees of California's city, county, regional, and other public agencies only.

Description

This newly updated online course offers a summary of fundamental principles, operational requirements and expected benefits of some of the frequently deployed Adaptive Traffic Control Systems. The first session presents various traffic control systems and general characteristics, market state, and evaluations of the ATCS. The second session addresses SCOOT and ACS Lite, two systems with similarities in algorithms but various detection and communication requirements. The third session presents SynchroGreen and InSync, recent ATCSs which recently gained a lot of popularity among the US customers. Finally, the fourth session focuses on SCATS (one of the oldest and widely deployed systems in the entire world) and other ATCSs from the US market. Each session is divided into three major parts: the first offers a summary of fundamental principles of a selected adaptive technology, the second covers summary of operational and institutional requirements to run adaptive control, and the third presents operational benefits from available case studies.

Topics Include

  • Fundamental principles of ATCS operations
  • Adjustment of signal timings and operational flexibility
  • Detection requirements
  • Communication requirements
  • Software and hardware requirements
  • Reported operational modes
  • Institutional preparation for deployment of an ATCS
  • Reported operational benefits

What You Will Learn

Students will obtain a significant amount of technical information to understand fundamental principles of operations, deployment requirements, and reported operational benefits (highlighted through exemplary case studies) of some of the frequently deployed Adaptive Traffic Control Systems. This information will help students to become familiar with these relatively new signal control technologies and develop a realistic set of expectations regarding their deployments and operational benefits.

Who Should Attend

This course is intended for traffic engineers, planners, technicians, and decision makers in municipal, county, and state agencies interested in the operations, requirements and benefits of Adaptive Traffic Control System technologies, particularly those with the responsibility for the planning, design, implementation, operation, and maintenance of traffic signal control systems for urban areas.

Cancellation Policy

To cancel your registration and receive a refund less a $75 processing fee, you must notify TechTransfer at least five (5) working days before the course is scheduled to begin. Notifications must be made in writing and sent by email to registrar@techtransfer.berkeley.edu. We reserve the right to charge the full course fee if proper notification is not sent to TechTransfer. We don't offer refunds for classes with registration fees of $75 or less.

In lieu of canceling your registration, you have three additional options: you may (1) transfer your registration to another class, (2) receive a tuition credit for the total amount, useable toward a future class, or (3) send a substitute in your place. Please contact us at least 5 full working days before the class is scheduled to begin so we may process your request.

If you’ve registered for a self-paced class, you cannot receive a refund once you start the class.

We recommend you discuss any possible problems or online security issues with your IT person before you register for any online classes. If you are worried about connectivity issues, please contact the online training coordinator the week before the class to schedule a time to test your system. If you do not test your system and you have technical issues during a live online class, we will not provide a refund.
