This course will guide transportation practitioners through various evaluation and conceptual design aspects for roundabouts in a multimodal and complete-street context. The course will cover topics related to planning and policy, safety, public involvement, operation, geometry, and other design components. The course will showcase many best practice examples through extensive photos or videos. The detailed topics will include geometric configuration, traffic operation evaluation, bike and pedestrian, right of way, drainage, and landscaping consideration based on the latest NCHRP 1043 and CA MUTCD 2026 guidelines. Lessons learned from past practices throughout California, other states, and other countries will be analyzed to assist students in evaluating future practice.Click here for a detailed outline.

What You Will Learn
By the end of this course, students will understand the principles and working concepts of roundabouts within contexts of policy, planning, public involvement, design and operation. Students will also learn about capacity analysis, crash rates, traffic calming, right-of-way impacts, geometric design principles, sight distance criteria, traffic operations, pedestrian and bicycle treatments, landscape, drainage as well as other system considerations. This course will evaluate many roundabouts implemented in US as well as other countries in Asia and Europe.Who Should Attend
This course will benefit transportation professionals involved in the planning, feasibility analysis, and design of roadway projects that may include intersection modifications and traffic-calming measures. Attendees will learn to quickly assess key considerations for installing roundabouts as an alternative to traditional intersection controls. The course is designed to expand the knowledge of individuals with some background in the evaluation and design of intersections and other mobility improvement projects; however, such experience is not a prerequisite for participation. Agency administrators and planners are also encouraged to attend, as the course provides valuable insights that can help educate the general public and support acceptance of roundabouts.For More Information

Cancellation Policy
To cancel your registration and receive a refund less a $75 processing fee, you must notify TechTransfer at least five (5) working days before the course is scheduled to begin. Notifications must be made in writing and sent by email to registrar@techtransfer.berkeley.edu. We reserve the right to charge the full course fee if proper notification is not sent to TechTransfer. We don't offer refunds for classes with registration fees of $75 or less.
In lieu of canceling your registration, you have three additional options: you may (1) transfer your registration to another class, (2) receive a tuition credit for the total amount, useable toward a future class, or (3) send a substitute in your place. Please contact us at least 5 full working days before the class is scheduled to begin so we may process your request.
If you’ve registered for a self-paced class, you cannot receive a refund once you start the class.

She has worked across the United States - in the Midwest and on both the East and West Coasts. She has traveled to many countries to learn about their transportation systems. In recent years, Ms. Zhou has established a reputation for expertise in complete streets, active transportation, and multimodal transportation in Southern California, and she has managed more than 50 active transportation design and planning projects. Among these projects, Ms. Zhou has developed procedures for walk audits, provided recommendations for pedestrian safety and accessibility improvements, and evaluated toolbox and design features of various pedestrian facilities. Ms. Zhou is a frequent presenter at the Institution of Transportation Engineers (ITE) and other professional society conferences.
