Description
Cold recycling of flexible pavements as an alternative to traditional maintenance (mill and overlay), rehabilitation, and reconstruction (remove and replace) procedures is growing in popularity because of its proven performance, lower costs, faster construction and resulting lower road user impacts, and the environmental benefits of reusing already paid-for materials. Implementation by local government agencies varies across the United States, with some hesitancy primarily linked to uncertainty about the choice of recycling method and recycling agent. Past guidance has tended to base recycling strategy choice on equipment type rather than distress type, origin, and depth, and the materials that will be recycled.This course introduces cold recycling as an approach to sustainably and cost-effectively dealing with flexible pavement maintenance, rehabilitation, reconstruction, and new construction.
The course takes participants through a background to cold recycling including terminology, where it can be used, equipment (wheel-driven, track-driven, and cold central plant), and recycling agents (emulsified or foamed asphalt, cement, lime); project investigation; choosing and an appropriate recycling strategy and recycling agent for a given project; pavement design; mix design; specifications; and construction considerations to ensure optimal long-term performance (i.e., what the agency site representative should look out for on a project).
The presentations are illustrated with numerous photographs, videos, and case studies.
Modules
This is a self-paced online class that will take approximately 10 hours to complete. This course comprises a series of modules that must be completed in the order presented. At the end of each module is a quiz that must be passed before moving on to the next module. There is no preset schedule or time limit to complete the class. You may exit the course at any time to return and resume later. Your progress will be saved. Cancellation Policy
To cancel your registration and receive a refund less a $75 processing fee, you must notify TechTransfer at least five (5) working days before the course is scheduled to begin. Notifications must be made in writing and sent by email to registrar@techtransfer.berkeley.edu. We reserve the right to charge the full course fee if proper notification is not sent to TechTransfer. We don't offer refunds for classes with registration fees of $75 or less.
In lieu of canceling your registration, you have three additional options: you may (1) transfer your registration to another class, (2) receive a tuition credit for the total amount, useable toward a future class, or (3) send a substitute in your place. Please contact us at least 5 full working days before the class is scheduled to begin so we may process your request.
If you’ve registered for a self-paced class, you cannot receive a refund once you start the class.
We recommend you discuss any possible problems or online security issues with your IT person before you register for any online classes. If you are worried about connectivity issues, please contact the online training coordinator the week before the class to schedule a time to test your system. If you do not test your system and you have technical issues during a live online class, we will not provide a refund.

Self-pacedDavid Jones
PhD, Associate Director, University of California Pavement Research Center, UC DavisDavid Jones is currently the Associate Director and Research Engineer at the University of California Pavement Research Center at UC Davis, where he has worked since 2006. His primary area of research at the UCPRC has focused on pavement recycling and the use of recycled materials in pavement applications. In the early part of his career, David worked internationally on low-volume road management, with research focused on design, construction, maintenance, and management of both unpaved and paved roads in both developed and developing countries. This research included development of performance-based material specifications, chemical treatment and stabilization, and improved maintenance management procedures for small agencies. Although unpaved roads are not a research focus area for Caltrans, David has maintained an interest in the area and completed numerous projects, primarily focused on writing guidance documents and development of web-based tools for improving unpaved road management. He is a past Chair of the Transportation Research Board's Technical Committee on Low Volume Roads.
