This class is offered in partnership with the California Department of Transportation, Division of Local Assistance. Registration fees are subsidized with funding from the Cooperative Training Assistance Program. Description

This introductory course covers the essential operational functions of traffic signals and components, starting with basic design plans and diagrams, general rules, and specifications. Participants will learn about signal cabinets and components and how they function, traffic signal detection and calibration, wiring, power, and basic diagnostic skills.

What You Will Learn

Students learn how to interpret traffic signals plans, diagnose malfunctioned signals, make better infrastructure decisions, and reduce the risk to your agency related to malfunctioned traffic signals.

Who Should Attend

The class is for traffic engineers, electrical contractors, and technicians who are new to traffic signal timing. Experienced practitioners who desire a "refresher" course also benefit. Advanced practitioners with significant experience may not be appropriate for this basic course.

Cancellation Policy

There are no refunds for classes with registration fees of $75 or less. In lieu of canceling your registration, you have three additional options: you may (1) transfer your registration to another class, (2) receive a tuition credit for the total amount, useable toward a future class, or (3) send a substitute in your place. Please contact us at least 5 full working days before the class is scheduled to begin so we may process your request.

If you’ve registered for a self-paced class, you cannot receive a refund once you start the class.

We recommend you discuss any possible problems or online security issues with your IT person before registering for any online classes. If you are worried about connectivity issues, please contact the online training coordinator the week before the class to schedule a time to test your system. If you do not test your system and you have technical issues during a live online class, we will not provide a refund.

Rafat Raie

Mr. Raie has nearly 35 years of traffic engineering & planning experience in both the public and private sectors. As a City Traffic Engineer for several cities, he is well experienced in the design, operations, planning, and maintenance. Mr. Raie has delivered numerous courses for professionals as an instructor with ITS Tech Transfer and conducted many safety assessments for tribal communities as part of the UC Berkeley SafeTREC program. In the past decade of his public sector experience, he led the deployment of several Smart City technologies for improved communications, parking management, detection, multi-modal data collection and signal preemption.


Leonard Gilliana

Traffic Signal Specialist, Advanced Mobility Group

Mr. Gillana brings nearly 40 years of public sector expertise in the area of traffic signal operations, construction, design and inspection. He has led the operations and maintenance of a smart city operations center and patented many key advancements in the industry. In the private sector, he led the implementation of the most sophisticated regional signal system in Coachella Valley. He co-founded a unique training establishment, LNR Transportation, inc. which developed several specialized courses shared with over 1000 signal professionals across the country. He has been an instructor with UC Berkeley Tech Transfer Program for the past ten years.
