This class delivery is supported by the California Department of Transportation, Division of Local Assistance, which offers reduced registration fees to employees of California's city, county, regional, and other public agencies.

Description

The course will provide a more detailed understanding of the construction inspection and associated material testing of concrete flatwork associated with street and road construction. This includes sidewalks, curb and gutter, driveways, plazas, etc. The instructor will discuss the production of cement and concrete, the basics of the concrete flatwork construction: the equipment, tools, and best practices to produce and the final product as designed. The instructor will also discuss agency quality assurance, contractor quality control, inspection, material testing, associated daily documentation and ADA and PROWAG compliance that is required. Illustrations and numerous photos are shown and discussed as well as example calculations. This course offered by the City and County Pavement Improvement Center CCPIC in partnership with TechTransfer. Completion of this course is required for participants who wish to work towards earning the Pavement Construction Inspection Certificate.

Modules

This is a self-paced online class that will take approximately 4 hours to complete. This course is comprised of a series of modules that must be completed in the order they are presented. At the end of each module is a quiz that must be passed before moving on to the next module. There is no preset schedule or time limit to complete the class. You may exit the course at any time to return and resume later. Your progress will be saved. It is up to you to finish all the modules in your own time and at your own pace.

  • Module 1 - PCC Basics Part 1 (Cements and Aggregates)
    • The manufacture of cements and aggregate properties for Concrete - 35 minutes
    • Quiz - 5 minutes
  • Module 2 - PCC Basics Part 2 (Water, Admixtures, Mix Design, Environmental Impacts)
    • Other concrete components: Water and Admixtures, concrete mix design, sustainability, and environmental impacts - 42 minutes
    • Quiz - 5 minutes
  • Module 3 - Inspection in the Field Part 1 (base and subgrade, forms, mix delivery)
    • Site preparation requirements, forms and forming, concrete mix placement- 35 minutes
    • Quiz - 5 minutes
  • Module 4 - Inspection in the Field Part 2 (testing, strength gain, Joints, finishing)
    • Material testing for quality assurance meeting strength requirements, jointing and finishing - 40 minutes
    • Quiz - 5 minutes
  • Module 5 -- Concrete and Complete Streets
    • Concrete flatwork and its critical role in providing accessible infrastructure - 20 minutes
    • Quiz - 5 minutes
  • Module 6 - ADA and PROWAG compliance
    • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Public Right of Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG) compliance requirements - 38 minutes

What You Will Learn

Participants will learn about the components of portland cement concrete (PCC), the concrete flatwork used in street improvements, describe key inspection items tied to the good performance of concrete, the field testing necessary to determine the acceptability of PCC in construction, concrete and complete streets, and the ADA and PROWAG criteria for sidewalks and curb and gutter.

Who Should Attend

This course is intended for construction inspectors, material testers, engineers, maintenance workers, and other technical staff involved in the construction, inspection, or material testing of road and street construction.

Cancellation Policy

To cancel your registration and receive a refund less a $75 processing fee, you must notify TechTransfer at least five (5) working days before the course is scheduled to begin. Notifications must be made in writing and sent by email to registrar@techtransfer.berkeley.edu. We reserve the right to charge the full course fee if proper notification is not sent to TechTransfer. We don't offer refunds for classes with registration fees of $75 or less.

In lieu of canceling your registration, you have three additional options: you may (1) transfer your registration to another class, (2) receive a tuition credit for the total amount, useable toward a future class, or (3) send a substitute in your place. Please contact us at least 5 full working days before the class is scheduled to begin so we may process your request.

If you’ve registered for a self-paced class, you cannot receive a refund once you start the class.

We recommend you discuss any possible problems or online security issues with your IT person before you register for any online classes. If you are worried about connectivity issues, please contact the online training coordinator the week before the class to schedule a time to test your system. If you do not test your system and you have technical issues during a live online class, we will not provide a refund.

Scott Gibson

P.E., Project Manager, Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County, Nevade

Mr. Gibson currently serves as a project manager for the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County, Nevada - an MPO that includes the local agencies of Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County. He has more than 40 years of highway construction and pavement engineering experience and is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin.
He oversees a variety of road construction projects and has been responsible for the RTC's pavement preservation program for the last 18 years - helping manage an annual budget of $30m. The regional road network currently has a PCI of 80, in the 90th percentile of comparably sized communities in the west.
He has made Reno his home since 1995. Since arriving in Reno, Scott has been active in the community both professionally and privately.
